Blackberry-Ginger Moscow Mule

IMG_8491.JPG

This is just the right amount of sweet and spicy, from the blackberries and fresh ginger.  Change the recipe to your desired taste, by adding more or less sugar, syrup, vodka and/or ginger beer.

Description

For a fresh take on a Moscow Mule, make some fresh blackberry and ginger syrup to amp up the flavor!

Ingredients

Scale

BLACKBERRY-GINGER SYRUP:

  • 1 pint blackberries, reserve 4 to 6 for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons superfine sugar, plus more to taste
  • 3/4-inch knob of fresh ginger, skin removed
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Blackberry juice, if you can find it*

FOR THE COCKTAIL:

  • Vodka
  • 2 limes
  • Ginger beer

Instructions

  1. For the Blackberry-Ginger Syrup: combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.  Run the puree through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the seeds and any chunks of ginger.  Add enough blackberry juice to yield 1 cup of syrup.  (You may have syrup left over; it is delicious served with champagne to make a blackberry bellini.)  If you can’t find the blackberry juice, just omit and add additional syrup or ginger beer to your liking.
  2. To make one mule: pour 1-1/2 to 2 ounces of vodka over ice in a copper cup, depending how strong you want to make the drink.  Add 1-1/2 ounces of the Blackberry-Ginger Syrup, the juice of 1/2 of a lime, and fill the glass with ginger beer.  Garnish with a blackberry and strips of lime zest, if desired.

Notes

*Trader Joe’s sells a blackberry juice, called Blackberry Crush, that is delicious and perfect for this drink.
